Some of you may be wondering why I have been off the grid for some time when it comes to workout photos. Well, I have learned a very valuable lesson this past year. After my extreme workout routine for my upcoming film Saaho, my first action role ever, my body showed me all the things that were wrong with my fitness and I had to get into physio treatment for six months! Turns out: Mom was right when she said “Sit up straight!” and “Shoulders back!” lol. All that slouching over 30 years has really left its marks on my spine. And two be honest, so has a lot of unhealthy posture from my modeling days. Now I learned a double chin is beautiful when it comes to good posture! And a strong core muscle is not just great for that bikini bod, but should be part of your everyday life cause it keeps your posture up!
It was my actual blessing that my dear friend Puja opened up a new wellness studio last year, the Movement Sanctuary, where she offers all types of amazing fitness classes, and brought awesome sea salt float tanks to Mumbai in her Liquid Sanctuary!
I’ve not been much of a fitness buff, most of you know that! With my pilates classes, occasional personal trainers, and mostly dance rehearsals, I’ve always felt I’m doing quite enough, but what I didn’t realize is that the comfortable living in Mumbai stopped me from actually moving every day. I grew up next to a forest and hour-long trekking in silence through nature used to be a very essential part of my life’s routine. I miss it a lot!
In fact, I think I have been focusing a lot on my spiritual fitness in these recent years and very much neglected my physical fitness. Balance in life is everything. I love the concept of the original gyms! The gyms in ancient Greek were a place for the physical workout as well as for philosophical debates! I think they really got it right lol cause don’t you wish those beefed up gym guys would attend philosophy classes too sometimes?
So last year when I was really unwell and started my physio treatment, I really discovered my love for yoga. Leaving aside the spiritual practice – even though I do love a good spiritual debate – it turned out to be such a blessing when it came to correcting my ill posture, especially for the healing process of my spine. If you haven’t tried it yet, do visit the Movement Sanctuary in Bandra and take a class! It’s become my favorite way of getting physically healthy, and of course, toning up for that bikini bod!
Yoga is essential to release tension and stress in the body AND it also helps balance out your muscles and joints. If you’re also into running and hitting the gym hard, yoga is a great way to work on your flexibility as a complimentary fitness regimen to all that cardio and lifting! Here are my top three favorite yoga poses to practice anytime, anywhere!
1. Downward Dog
Downward dog elongates your entire spine and works on strengthening your whole body. In this posture, you’ll notice that your arms and legs work equally to create length. The cool thing is – you don’t even need a mat to do this one, just a flat surface or even on the grass!
2. All the Warriors
Because who doesn’t like feeling like a strong, empowered warrior? I know I do! Warrior gives you so much strength in your lower body and really works on balancing out your hips, which is where we store so much of our tension and emotions.
3. Child’s Pose
This is the ultimate restorative posture that truly relieves stress and fatigue. It is super gentle on the entire body and works on relaxing the spine and upper body while stretching the ankles and hips. If you take your knees wider in this pose, you’ll find a lovely release in your lower back also! I especially love child’s pose because it’s so relaxing!
